After pre-submission period as proposal poster design, it is assigned that individual posters should be submitted. Even if our group work as individual, we decided to prepare our posters as it will be all. Therefore, we create a base, certain fonts and measurement in order to demonstrate the common attitude.
In this week’s lecture on architectural profession and practice given by Tanju ATAYLAR as fire protection consultant under the subject of Fire Protection & Architectural Space.
First of all, he started by talking about fire security in structures. There are certain matters in order to obtain the fire protection such as fire escape possibilities, fire protection(springs, fire extinguisher etc.), fire zone|compartmation. Since performance based design is not applied in local regulations, fire safety remains limited.
Moreover, by regarding the escape from fire area, there are certain limitations in architectural regulations. As an example, a building for gathering like museums have to stairs that their fifty percent of it has a direct connection to the outsite. A space which have more than fifty people must have at least two exits inside of it. Similarly, for five hundred people there have three exits, one thousand people it has four exits etc. Additionally, fire regulations are specified for stairs, ramps and such. Fire regulation emcompasses all types of buildings except TSK and National Defense Department of Turkey. As a consequence, in today’s conditions there are plenty of high-rise structure and complex buildings increase the risk of fire. These circumstances needs professional practice and applicability of regulations. According to our instructor, implementation of the regulation in 2007 should be increased and previous constructions of this date must be examined in order to decrease the risk of fire.
-Project from South Korea // The site includes many structures that represent Seoul’s traditions and history which have lots of similarities between our site, Şişhane/İstanbul.
-The structure has inside area that are used for short-term shops and temporary, rotating exhibitions, all of which can be accessed without buying an entrance ticket.
-Within the complex there are also exhibition halls visually tied to the buildings.
-Instead of creating a symbolic form for the museum, they established a series of open courtyards that mediated between the historic fragments and modern spaces.
TEDU Faculty of Architecture | MAUS Studio provided one-day critical thinking workshop on ‘From Old to New City : ULUS’ in order to experience the historical city center in Ankara. In morning session, three groups|scholars // Ali Cengizkan, Baykan Günay, Hakan Kaynar made seperate workshop by walking around the sites. In the afternoon session, we provided group work by gathering information and designing a initial poster presentation.
It is quite significant workshop series for the first time, we have the opportunity to work with people from different schools and disciplines. In our own workshop which is held from Hakan Kaynar, we tried to read places through literary texts which includes information about Ankara. We started our tour through the oldest railway station, our text from Nazım Hikmet’s ‘Human Landscapes From My Country’ He implies the city’s formality, calmness and human typologies. It followed from Nacit Sıkkı Örik’s ‘Without Night’ by questioning the term new and old, and standing in front of İstanbul in terms of innovation. As we were walking around Gençlik Park, we have reviewed the texts of Barış Bıçakçı and Nejat Akgün who be loved and love their own cities and its characteristics.
After the trip, we noticed that similar places and accents in the foreground in all texts which we have no idea before the tour:
-Acacia trees from Yunus Emre Institute
With ever-developing technology, two issues that are frequently discussed today are printed or digital mediums of information. Many institutions choose to focus on one of these. In that point, ‘Mimarlığın Yayını | Yayının Mimarlığı’ questions how we write and how we produce publications and it’s future in terms of permanence.
The activity was hosted by our university, participants are:
- Müge Cengizkan
- Melis Acar
- Esen Karol
- Melis Cankara
- Banu Binat
- Levent Şentürk
In this week’s lecture on architectural profession and practice given by Mehmet OKUTAN as mechanical engineer under the subject of Mechanical Systems & Architectural Space / architectural and mechanical relations of structures.
First of all, he started by talking about current business situations as corporate and boutique offices and their job opportunities. Regardless of their scale, he said that it is more important office’s attitude towards business professionalism.
Moreover, one of the problems which they faced with compared to their business history is the negligance. The reason why the problems occured during the construction and after-usage is that employer considers quick submission and financial concerns instead of obtaining succesful work. The fact that there is a demand for good work, is the most important influence on good work. Additionally, he mentioned that there was a huge differences between 1950’s construction circumstances and today’s point of constuction facilities. The most important factor is irregularity during job by regarding the relations of employee and given work. Therefore, when contracting, good job demands should be well-defined and business department must be consistent with what is requested.
As a consequence, he argued and questioned the reasons + results of the mechanical construction with a relation of architectural space by regarding the today’s conditions. Fast and qualified working is one of the most important demand through today’s circumstances.
In this week’s lecture on architectural profession and practice given by Cem ALTINÖZ who is partner of Öncüoğlu Architects as working on housing, mixed-use, shopping, office, commercial large scale projects under the concept of Project Development Process // Organization in Large Scale Projects.
Initially, it is presented that large-scale projects is to include more disciplines into project by working specialists. Since construction projects require detailed works, more shift with specialists and overtime with site inspection, large-scaled projects could be considered as long-term projects.
Moreover, differentiation of consultant and engineer is another condition related with the large-scale project. Whereas consultants work for getting opinion of projects, engineers are working partners.
As an example of project concultancy:-Acoustic Consultancy-Fire Line Consultancy // includes fire zones escape routes, escaping distances and features of fire doors of project, wall thicknesses according to the degree of danger-Façade Consultancy
-Mechanical HVAC Plans and Concultancy // For larger buildings, engineers analyze, design, and specify the HVAC Systems which are heating, ventilation, and air conditioning in order to manage the energy efficiency.
-LEED / Green Building Certificate Consultancy
As a result, since large-scale projects contain much more input with the same complexity, consultants’ proposals are tested by mock-up trials of materials in order to obtain effective results.
In this week’s lecture on architectural profession and practice given by Ziya İMREN under the subject of Competitions / Organization in a Competitive Environment as national and international architectural competitions by experienced on Ziya İmren Architects.
While discussing architectural design competitions, we will also consider the political, economic and social developments of the country. These circumstances are also related with the architectural context of design competitions as economical, aesthetical, functional, technical and contextual environment.
Through Ziya İmren was mentioning about his competition work and their detail, he said quite important thing for us explaining the reason behind the architectural competitions. ”The main role of architectural competitions is to contribute to the theoretical basis of architectural development. Because every architectural design process rebuilds the architectural design idea.”
Moreover, when we try to analyse the project development process;
-exemination of list of condition
-preparation of sheet
As a consequence, architectural competitions are quite effective way for many architects to develop proposals to solve the architectural work and also be influential to self-promotion and demonstrating professional qualities. It has also important place in terms of being a platform where architecture discussed.
