The Image of the City, Kevin Lynch / Arch 121

This week’s assignment was Kevin Lynch’s book named  The City Images and Its Elements. When we google it, we can realize that this book is really significant in terms of urban planing. According to him, Urban fabric is a complex notion and it could be schematized. Thats’s why, in order to understand urban life, we need image of the city.

There are five main element which simplify complexity of images of the city. Because of reinforcing expression, there are couple of photographs taken from internet and my sketch.

-Path

-Landmark

-District

-Node

-Edge

While we identify this 5 elements on the a city plan which resembles complicated, someone who don’t know anything about this city could have opinion.

1.Landmark

It could be a symbol of the city. There are plenty of examples for Ankara such as Atakule, Sheraton Building, Anıtkabir and such. Then I selected Anıtkabir due to common usage in postcards, posters and introductory films.Görsel

2. Node

An area which is focal point in terms of meeting, community and such. Moreover, we can identify it as a congestion point. In Ankara, Tunalı Hilmi Street can be example for this.
